Frequently Asked Questions

What is a barcode and how does it work?

A barcode encodes text or numbers as a pattern of parallel bars and spaces of varying widths. A scanner reads the widths, decodes them back into the original data, and looks that data up in a database, so the barcode itself usually just points to a record rather than storing a description.

Which barcode format should I use?

EAN-13 and UPC-A are the standard retail formats printed on packaged goods worldwide (EAN-13) and in the US and Canada (UPC-A). CODE128 is a flexible, high-density format used for shipping labels and logistics. CODE39 and MSI are common for internal inventory and asset tracking. Codabar is still used by some libraries and blood banks.

Why does my barcode show an error or not generate?

Each format only accepts certain characters and, for formats like EAN-13, EAN-8, and UPC-A, a specific number of digits. If the value does not match the rules for the selected format, the tool shows an error instead of an invalid barcode. Try the built-in example for that format to see a working value.

Can I use these barcodes commercially?

Yes. Barcodes generated here are yours to use for any purpose, including commercial packaging and shipping labels, with no watermark or attribution required. Note that EAN-13 and UPC-A numbers used for real retail products must be licensed from GS1 to be globally unique.

What is the difference between EAN-13 and UPC-A?

UPC-A encodes 12 digits and is standard in the United States and Canada. EAN-13 encodes 13 digits and is the international standard used almost everywhere else. Every UPC-A code is also a valid EAN-13 code with a leading zero, so most modern scanners read both interchangeably.

Is my data private when generating a barcode?

Yes. The barcode is drawn entirely in your browser using JavaScript. The text or number you enter is never uploaded, stored, or sent to any server.
