Frequently asked questions

What is a HEIC file?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the default photo format on iPhones since iOS 11. It produces files about half the size of JPG at similar quality, using modern HEVC compression.

Why can't Windows or Android open HEIC files?

HEIC uses patented HEVC technology with licensing costs, which is why Windows, Android, and most web apps don't support it out of the box. JPG is universally supported and doesn't have those restrictions.

Will I lose quality converting HEIC to JPG?

Some quality loss is possible because JPG is lossy. At the default setting of 92, the difference is invisible to the eye. Use PNG output for lossless conversion, or WebP for a modern compromise between size and quality.

Does this tool upload my photos anywhere?

No. Everything runs locally in your browser using WebAssembly. Your photos never leave your device, are never uploaded, and are never logged. Close the tab and they're gone.

How large can my HEIC files be?

Up to 50 MB per file is supported. Conversion speed depends on your device — a modern laptop converts a typical 3 MB iPhone photo in under a second. Older phones may take a few seconds per file.

Can I convert iPhone Live Photos?

Yes. Live Photos and burst HEICs contain multiple frames. The tool extracts each frame and converts it separately, producing files named like IMG_1234-1.jpg, IMG_1234-2.jpg, etc.
