Frequently Asked Questions
What are meta tags?
Meta tags are snippets of HTML placed in the <head> of a page that describe the page to search engines, browsers, and social networks. They don't appear on the page itself, but they control how the page is displayed in search results and when shared on social media.
Why do meta tags matter for SEO?
Search engines use the title and description to decide how to list your page in results. Good meta tags improve click-through rate because users see a clear, relevant summary before they click. They also help Open Graph and Twitter Card previews render correctly when your page is shared, which drives more traffic from social platforms.
What's the ideal title length?
Aim for 50–60 characters. Google typically displays around 600 pixels of title text, which works out to roughly 60 characters for English. Longer titles are truncated with an ellipsis, and shorter titles can waste valuable space. The live preview shows you exactly how your title will look.
What's the ideal description length?
Aim for 150–160 characters. Google usually displays up to about 160 characters of the meta description on desktop and slightly less on mobile. Write a compelling summary that includes your main keyword and a reason for the user to click — this is effectively ad copy for your page.
What's the difference between Open Graph and Twitter Cards?
Open Graph is a protocol used by Facebook, LinkedIn, Pinterest, and most messaging apps (WhatsApp, Slack, Discord). Twitter Cards are Twitter's own protocol. They overlap heavily, so most sites set both. If you skip Twitter tags, Twitter falls back to Open Graph — but setting explicit Twitter tags gives you more control, especially for choosing between the small and large image layouts.
Do I still need the meta keywords tag?
No. Google officially stopped using the meta keywords tag as a ranking signal over 15 years ago, and every major search engine has followed. The tag is harmless but contributes nothing to your ranking. This tool still supports it because a few niche search engines use it, but you can safely leave it empty.
