Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate a tip?

Enter your bill amount and select a tip percentage. The calculator instantly shows the tip amount, total, and per-person share if splitting. You can use the quick-pick buttons (10%, 15%, 18%, 20%, 25%) or enter a custom percentage.

What is a good tip percentage?

In the US, 15–20% is the standard range for good service at restaurants. 18% is a common default for adequate service, while 20–25% reflects excellent service. For delivery, 15–20% is typical. Adjust based on the quality of service you received.

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

In the US, tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is technically correct, but tipping on the post-tax total is also widely accepted and often easier. The difference is small — on a $50 bill with 10% tax, the tip difference between pre- and post-tax is only about $0.90 at 18%.

How does bill splitting work?

Set the number of people to 2 or more. The calculator divides both the total and the tip amount equally among everyone. Each person's share is shown as a separate result below the main totals.

What does the round-up feature do?

When round-up is on, the total (or each person's share when splitting) is rounded up to the nearest whole number. The adjusted tip is recalculated automatically, and the effective tip percentage is shown in parentheses so you always know what you're leaving.

Is tipping expected in every country?

No. Tipping culture varies widely. It is expected in the US, Canada, and many Latin American countries. In Japan, South Korea, and much of Europe, tipping is uncommon or may even be considered rude. Always check local customs when travelling.

Is this calculator free to use?

Yes, completely free. All calculations run in your browser — no data is sent to any server, no account required, and there are no ads or paywalls.
