What is a Flesch Reading Ease score?
The Flesch Reading Ease score rates text on a 0-100 scale based on average sentence length and average syllables per word. Higher scores mean easier reading: 90-100 is very easy (5th grade), while scores below 30 are very difficult (college graduate level).
What is the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level?
The Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level converts the same sentence-length and syllable-count data into a US school grade level, such as 8.0 meaning an eighth-grader should be able to understand the text.
What readability score should I aim for?
For general audiences and most web content, aim for a Flesch Reading Ease score of 60-70 (roughly 8th-9th grade level). Marketing copy and news often target 70-80, while technical or academic writing may sit lower.
How is syllable count calculated?
The tool uses a common vowel-group heuristic to estimate syllables per word. It is highly accurate for typical English text but, like all automated syllable counters, can be slightly off for unusual or foreign words.
Does this work for languages other than English?
The Flesch formulas were designed for English and are calibrated against English vocabulary and sentence patterns. You can paste text in any language and the tool will still count words, sentences, and syllables, but the ease and grade-level scores are only meaningful for English text.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. All analysis happens locally in your browser using JavaScript. Your text is never sent to a server, stored, or tracked.
